I’ve come to appreciate using canned beans as a simple way to cook a tasty and nutritious meal at home or while traveling...it’s fast, simple and accessible to everyone.
I like to cook my own beans, but I keep cans on hand for convenience and for when I don't plan ahead. The instant pot does a great job if I have an hour, but the cans are great when I just need a cup or so. If you have all day, a slow cooker makes great beans too
Thanks for contributing your thoughts Weslyn! I'm with you on most, but I don't have an instant pot, so I often default to my pressure cooker (but that still requires some forethought and soaking of the beans for at least 4-6 hours)...
I agree!! The last 6 months of travel for me has been all about beans on toast, beans with rice or beans with pasta. Especially in Greece with those delicious giant beans 😋
Mouthwatering as usual, Jack! I feel like this recipe with adapt well with dried beans in the instant pot. I might have to play around with it. I often make giant pots of stew or chili, but this would be great for putting over pasta or quinoa.
I think my favorite quick bean dish is either chili or quinoa kitchari (the recipe from the original 30-minute vegan cookbook). Both are simple, hearty and quick to throw together.
Thanks Sam... I think beans are incredibly flexible and adaptable to many flavors and styles of cooking - it's one of the numerous benefits of having them on hand...either in canned or dried form. The Kitchari recipes sound delicious...
I buy dry beans in bulk, so I have lots of beans to experiment with!
The kitchari is phenomenal. Base recipe is red lentils, quinoa, whole raw garlic cloves, and some chopped onion. Then you just add chopped vegetables and whatever seasonings you want. I often also stir in some nutritional yeast and a drizzle of coconut aminos.
Lol. I have a tiny kitchen and not too many cooking items - knife, pot, baking stone...you get the idea. But this one is good and I love beans. I like the ones that come in the pouch, they seem to taste better than the ones in a can.
Yes.... Plenty of options available to take this idea in different directions, but it is hard to beat beans, tomatoes and sage... Thanks for commenting...
I like to make a quick snack with beans, adding some spices, and some other easy veggies, leftovers perhaps, or some canned sweetcorn, or some frozen peas. And I'm not averse to adding some Piccalilli or Branston Pickle!
Adding this to my weeknight recipe rotation! I am not ashamed to admit that I am a frequent user of the humble canned bean and am glad to see it highlighted here. :)
That sounds like the perfect, simple recipe when you don’t have time or energy. Thanks!
Simple and extremely delicious (also great this time of year with fresh tomatoes from the garden)...
I have to wait until summer for that, but this would be a fantastic use for seconds tomatoes.
We've made these beans twice this week. It's extremely easy to prepare, and the sage is such a complementary addition. Thanks and welcome back!
That is the best possible complement I could ever hope to receive - thanks...and I'm thrilled you like this quick recipe!

Thanks for contributing Arielle...and I'm on the same page as you with those giant Greek beans...
Oooh I am always in a bean phase! This will certainly be my next white bean recipe - I love these flavors!
I agree about the perpetual bean phase thing!
I hope you enjoy the recipe...and I'm certain you will develop some interesting flavor twist!

Nice tips - thanks for the contribution Sam!
Oh, now this I can do!! Awesome!
Oh fabulous...I have more gluten-free items coming up...so, be sure to get your kitchen in order! 😁

I love the combination of beans, tomatoes and sage and I’ll be making this in the summer when the tomatoes start ripening, thank you

Canned beans (and tomatoes) make this exactly the sort of thing I turn to in the cold months too - thank heavens for canning!
Canned beans also made this an easy recipe to make during a recent camping excursion...
Agree. Canned beans are magic. I have a whole shelf full of different types in my larder. I’m never short of a snack!
Do you have a special bean dish you like to prepare?
